The Russian Ambassador to Egypt, Georgy Borisenko, emphasized the strong trust and understanding between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.
Speaking at the opening session of the conference “BRICS: Prospects for Economic and Cultural Cooperation”, Borisenko highlighted the robust partnership between the two nations, particularly under the BRICS framework.
Borisenko noted that BRICS has gained global significance, now incorporating more countries. Russia, currently holding the bloc’s presidency, prioritizes fostering multilateral cooperation among member states and expanding its membership. He revealed that over 200 events had been organized this year under BRICS across various levels, with more than 12 Egyptian governmental delegations visiting Russia.
This collaboration spans political coordination, international security, and joint ventures in economic, cultural, and sports activities. He also pointed to BRICS’ active involvement in areas like healthcare and agriculture, ensuring a balanced representation of developed and developing countries within the bloc.
The ambassador stressed the need for financial cooperation among countries without relying on the US dollar. Although Russia does not oppose dollar usage, Borisenko reiterated that US-imposed sanctions have accelerated the search for alternatives. He argued that the US and the West are losing dominance in the global financial system, but achieving new mechanisms requires international cooperation.
Borisenko added that Egypt’s BRICS membership offers significant opportunities for project facilitation and aligns with the bloc’s goal of fostering independence from Western influence. He highlighted BRICS as a platform for creating a multipolar world, enabling member nations to counterbalance Western control.
While no immediate plans exist for broad BRICS expansion, Borisenko revealed ongoing discussions about admitting one or two new members. He mentioned 13 candidate countries, including Algeria, with potential for partner state designation.
The conference, titled “BRICS: Prospects for Economic and Cultural Cooperation,” was held under the theme “Egyptian Membership and Russian Presidency” at the Russian Cultural Center in Cairo. Organized by the Dialogue Foundation for Humanities Studies and Research with Russian Embassy sponsorship, the event underscored BRICS’ role in tackling global challenges and fostering shared economic, social, and cultural impact.
Egypt’s active involvement in BRICS highlights its commitment to tackling global challenges and advancing multipolar collaboration. The conference emphasized the importance of BRICS’ economic and cultural initiatives, cementing its role as a dynamic force in reshaping the international order.
